Lindy Hockenbary
Meet Lindy
Lindy’s career began in a technology-equipped classroom, where she first blended teaching with technology. This sparked a journey into the world of supporting educators, encompassing roles in instructional technology, professional development, and curriculum design.
Over the last ten years, her consulting work has taken her to schools across the world. These experiences have given her a unique perspective on K-12 education and have been instrumental in her ultimate goal to support classroom teachers in delivering transformative learning experiences. This goal is captured in her book, “A Teacher’s Guide to Online Learning,” and in her daily work.
On a typical day, Lindy can be found assisting educational technology companies to meet K–12 educator needs and facilitating hands-on training for educators. Her work, often referred to as the “Lindy touch,” is highly regarded. This has led her to be named a 2024 EdTech Leader. She also holds several EdTech certifications, including Google for Education Certified Trainer, Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) Expert and Master Trainer, and Minecraft Certified Trainer and Ambassador.
Based in Bozeman, Montana, surrounded by mountains and her dogs, Lindy continues her mission to improve learning experiences for all.
Dr. Thuan Nguyen
Meet Dr. Thuan
Dr. Thuan Nguyen began serving as AVID’s CEO in 2022, following his tenure as President and Chief Operating Officer. Before his time at AVID, he spent 20 years working in public education, and he received national and international recognition for his work. He is responsible for doubling the number of AVID schools and spearheading the creation of more resources for educators and students than at any other time in AVID’s 44-year history.
In 2021, Thuan became the 58th person in San Diego State University’s history to be awarded an honorary doctorate for his work in education and for the free public services he created at AVID to help more than a million educators navigate the pandemic. The first person to receive such an honor from SDSU was John F. Kennedy.
Over the last two years, he has been spending his time meeting with teachers and school leaders to better understand their challenges and needs. In response, Thuan has been:
• Advocating and pressuring the U.S. Department of Education for a better response to FAFSA challenges and to provide more resources and support to AVID schools and students.
• Helping to address teacher turnover, preparation, and retention with the new AVID Certified Educator Program.
• Providing support for multilingual learners (the fastest growing demographics) through a new professional learning solution called AVID Emerge.
• Ensuring that AVID schools are on the forefront of, and benefit from, AI by launching AVID’s Instructional AI initiative in 2022. Today, more than a thousand classrooms and thousands of educators benefit from AVID Instructional AI tool, resources, and strategies.
More recently, he expanded AVID’s work by adding “career” to AVID’s mission statement and by launching services for AVID Alums.

With extensive experience as a teacher, leader, and advocate, Dr. Sullivan has continuously worked to foster inclusive, adaptive learning environments that prepare students for success in a global society. His educational philosophy is grounded in the belief that educational justice is an imperative, and every student deserves access to high-quality, research-based instruction that promotes critical thinking, compassion, and personal responsibility.
Dr. Sullivan holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts from Stephens College, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Missouri State University, a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Western Governors University, and a Doctorate of Education in Instructional Leadership from Lindenwood University. He has also presented at numerous national and international conferences including METC, NCCE, International Baccalaureate Global Conference, Google Champions Symposium, and the National Blended and Personalized Learning Conference.
Dr. Sullivan began his teaching career in New York City through the Urban Teaching Fellows graduate program at Fordham University, where he taught in an alternative middle school serving a diverse, high-needs population. This experience solidified his commitment to education as a tool for addressing social inequities and fostering a more just society. Following his time in New York, Dr. Sullivan taught a variety of English Language Arts courses at Nixa High School in Nixa, Missouri. His dedication to student advocacy was exemplified by his leadership of the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA), which was awarded the GLSEN National GSA of the Year in 2016. Dr. Sullivan’s advocacy extended beyond the school walls, as he worked alongside students at the state capital to lobby for stronger anti-bullying legislation.
At Central High School in Springfield, Missouri, Dr. Sullivan expanded his impact as a blended learning mentor. He provided training on G Suite, Chromebooks, and Canvas to support technology integration and authored the district-wide curriculum for the virtual Film as Literature course. His work as part of the IGNiTE initiative supported hundreds of educators and students in effectively leveraging technology to enhance teaching and learning. As a Google Certified Trainer, Dr. Sullivan curated Springfield’s digital edtech library and led professional development on trauma-informed practices, educational equity, instructional technology integration, and restorative practices. In a subsequent role as a Learning Specialist with Springfield Public Schools, Dr. Sullivan provided coaching and professional development to over 400 teachers across multiple sites. Using Cognitive Coaching and the Adaptive Schools framework, he facilitated coaching cycles to help new teachers grow as reflective practitioners and develop collaborative leadership within their PLC teams.
In 2021, Dr. Sullivan transitioned to serve as the Director of Technology and Innovation for the North Kitsap School District in Washington. In this role, he leads district-wide technology initiatives aimed at fostering equitable, adaptive learning environments for students from early learners to high school seniors. A significant achievement under his leadership has been the successful launch of the district’s one-to-one technology initiative, NKSDConnected, which ensures that every student has access to developmentally appropriate digital resources. This initiative has empowered students to engage in personalized, meaningful learning and has played a critical role in closing gaps in access for underserved communities. Additionally, Dr. Sullivan oversees all library media programming, with a focus on foundational literacy, digital citizenship, and student voice, creating spaces where students can develop both academic and digital literacy skills.
While Dr. Sullivan’s professional accomplishments are extensive, his greatest joy lies in his family. As the father of four teenagers (16, 15, 14, 13), his children inspire him every day to be a better learner, leader, and advocate, reinforcing his dedication to ensuring that every student has the tools and opportunities they need to thrive.
