Marne Bender, a Library Media Specialist with East Helena Public Schools, has been honored as the Innovative Teacher Librarian of the Year by the Northwest Council for Computer Education (NCCE). This prestigious award recognizes Bender’s long-standing dedication to transforming education through technology and her unique ability to impact students across all grade levels.

“It is a true honor to recognize Marne Bender as our Innovative Teacher Librarian of the Year. Few educators embody the full spectrum of technology powered learning the way Marne does—guiding our youngest kindergarten students as they take their first steps with digital tools, while simultaneously leading high school learners into advanced arenas like esports and data literacy,” stated NCCE COO, Bobby Myers.

Bender serves a unique role within the district, spending half of her day with kindergarten learners and the other half as the library media specialist at East Helena High School. Since beginning her teaching career in 2009, she has consistently been at the forefront of educational technology. She was instrumental in the early implementation of iPads in the classroom—once famously described as “part robot” for her ability to control a SmartBoard from her neck-worn iPad—and has since led successful transitions to 1:1 Chromebook environments.

“Her ability to make technology meaningful, accessible, and empowering at every age level is nothing short of transformative. We are proud to celebrate a leader whose vision is shaping the future of learning across the Pacific Northwest,” Myers continued.

Beyond the library, Bender has made significant contributions to the regional educational community. In 2014, she co-founded Edcamp MT-West, an “unconference” that continues to foster collaboration among educators and will celebrate its 13th summer session in 2026. She also serves as the coach for East Helena High School’s first Esports team, which she founded in 2019. Under her leadership, the team has secured multiple state titles and produced nationally recognized scholastic esports prospects.

Bender’s recent work focuses on navigating the complexities of student data privacy and on integrating artificial intelligence tools for both students and staff. She also launched the Story Squad, a program where high school students travel to elementary schools to mentor and read to younger students, bridging the gap between the district’s oldest and youngest learners.

Marne’s experiences are as vast as her influence, and her approach has a lasting impact. Without a doubt, Marne has maintained her requirements with precision and a smile! She is most certainly worthy of the designation!
