NCCE’s Summits are a great way to maximize your learning at NCCE 2019. This year’s Summits offer a wide variety of topics to meet your needs. All Summits are on Tuesday, February 26th from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. There are 3 different Summits to choose from at NCCE 2019:

Neuroscience of Learning Summit

Neuroscience-of-Learning-SummitIn the past few years, learning scientists together with neuroscientists have made amazing discoveries about how the human brain learns. Evidence of recent methodological changes derived from brain-centric models has produced results, which are always significant, and often breathtaking. Join Dr. Timothy Kieran O’Mahony, Missy Widmann and Conn McQuinn, for a day of learning how to translate the most significant of these discoveries into practical teaching that results in powerful improvements in education for both teachers and students.

Dr. Eric Chudler, University of Washington, will introduce you to the “why of neuroscience ” with his opening keynote, “Journey Into the Brain: The Importance of Understanding Neuroscience.” The remainder of the day, you will focus on the “how of neuroscience in your classroom” with activities that will increase your capacity to use neuroscience to inform classroom practices and processes.

Teacher Librarian Summit 2019!

Teacher LibrarianIn the future, students will access information and answer questions with a pocket-sized digital device they can take anywhere.  Well, the future is here! Keeping up with the digital natives, a.k.a., your students, is a monumental task. For Teacher-Librarians, staying agile, current, and relevant with technology, digital resources, and emerging STEM trends is more important than ever.  As teacher-librarians our focus is no longer only to guide our students to locate resources, but to provide an inviting, comfortable environment that allows students to create, collaborate, make, and build. Learn how to meet these challenges and transform your school library at the NCCE19 Teacher-Librarian Summit.  The day’s activities will be facilitated by author, Todd Burleson and NCCE’s Tech-Savvy Librarian, Morgen Larsen. Todd is an international speaker, the Hubbard Woods Library Media Specialist in Winnetka, IL, home to the “IDEA Lab” and the School Library Journal 2016 School Librarian of the Year.
Todd’s opening keynote, “Becoming Comfortable Being Uncomfortable,” will help us explore the challenges we face in creating these 21st century libraries.  Change is hard for everyone. This keynote will examine some of the obstacles and explore how we can use our creativity to address them. You’ll be inspired, challenged and on the path to being comfortable being uncomfortable.
Todd will join Shannon Miller, Mark Ray and Craig Seasholes in dialogue on current challenges, issues, needs and possibilities with our panel of TL All Stars. You will spend time collaborating with others while you devise and document plans for your library’s transformation. Lastly, learn about tips, tricks, and new tech in breakout sessions and from fellow librarians as they present in our TL Smackdown.

Learning Transformed: 8 Keys to Designing Tomorrow’s Schools, Today

Learning TransformedWith the vast education inequities that have existed for centuries, all that is known about how students learn, and the predictions regarding the world that our students will face tomorrow, using a traditional one-size-fits-all approach to teaching and learning is educational malpractice. Built on the foundation of leadership and school culture, the presenter’s redesigned learning experience fundamentally shifts the teaching and learning paradigm to one that is personal, is grounded in evidence, leverages technology, transforms the spaces in which learning occurs, helps educators grow professionally, promotes collaboration with the community, and, ultimately, ensures the sustainability of the system as a whole. Based on ASCD’s best selling book, Learning Transformed: 8 Keys to Designing Tomorrow’s Schools Today, this workshop will dissect these eight keys, which each serve as a puzzle piece for redesigning the learning experience. Join Eric Sheninger and Tom Murray to learn how to unlock tomorrow’s schools so that today’s modern learners leave ready to create new industries, find new cures, and solve world problems. You are part of the solution!
